A short history of chess interfaces

Where these board designs come from. Real, freely-licensed screenshots — from the XBoard and WinBoard engine front-ends and the Linux ICS clients of the 1990s and 2000s to today's open web boards. Every image is credited and links to its source on Wikimedia Commons.

Take a design with you. Copy a card's design code, drop in the runtime — <script src="pandachess-theme.js"></script> — and call PandaChessBoards.render(el, THEME). It also exposes baseCSS(), exportCSS(theme) and pieceSVG(code, set). Pieces are the open-source cburnett set, embedded in the runtime and mirrored in /pieces/cburnett/ — so every design renders offline with no network.
